Medway hosted our first competitive action of the new year for the popular three team tournament called the New Years Cup. We headed over to a bone chillingly cold Rochester and after a quick dog poo check from the local coaches we were down to action against Blackheath.

The Heath kids were swifter out of the blocks than their counterparts and raced into a 4-1 lead but as the boys and girls in blue an gold warmed up a bit(but not that much) the game tilted on its head and three well taken tries meant the first game finished level.

After a short break we moved to the even colder pitch at the top of the wind swept hill with views of the medway bridge. Sadly we were guilty of some car spotting as some insisive play saw Blackheath come out as 6-2 winners.

Match three saw us come into contact with an old friend as we took on Medway whose team contained our former player and U10 legend Oli Knight. Oli has lost none of his twinkle toed try scoring prowess in his move down the A2 and managed to grab a hattrick. Proof however that team will always overcome individual was that the beckenham team (i can't remember who scored them but it doesn't matter) scored 5.

Final match was again a blackheath team who put us under the cosh in the first half and were a number of tries to the good but another second half revival again ensued and Jay topped of the day with a great try.

All in all a really good way to start the rugby year. Most pleasing things were the team work and team spirit this group certainly have plenty of it as despite periods when we were behind in games in freezing cold conditions everyone kept plugging away and not giving up right until the final whistle. We didn't get out the player of the week trophy but to honest we could have given into to any number of players. All the coaches agreed some of the passages of play were the best that this team has ever produced our challenge to do that all the time and improve on it. The broad smiles said it all and it is simply great to see a team where they all get on so well.
