The U13s reached their first final since the switch to 15 a side rugby this season when they faced Bromley at Beccehamians ground. This was a stiffer task again from the previous rounds and had the added spice of local rivalry with Bromley.

From the outset, Bromley applied pressure on Beckenham as they attacked up the hill and Beckenham had hardly broken out of their own half before Bromley scored a try, which they were unable to convert. This was the first points that Beckenham had conceded in over 2 hours of rugby in this competition.

Beckenham had been playing well despite being entrenched in their own half but falling behind, seemed to have the positive effect on Beckenham resulting in a try scored by captain Louis Weber in the 21 minute. This was his 7th try of this Plate competition. Ben Murphy converted to give the U13s the lead, which they maintained to the half-time break.

The second half saw Beckenham playing up the hill to better effect with the pack [playing particularly well against noticeably bigger individuals in the Bromley pack.

Several good breaks were seen with Adam Kirkpatrick playing in an unfamiliar position in the backs breaking out of the line for a gain of 25-30 metres showing how Beckenham can attack. The game was well-balanced until Louis Weber broke free and charged forward on the left to hand the ball to Jacob Richards to score to the left of the posts. This combination worked well throughout the game and the try was just reward. Unfortunately, the try was not converted leaving the game still within Bromley’s reach for what everybody thought was 4 more minutes until the referee announced that there were 10 more minutes on the clock.

Bromley tried, in vain, to breach the Beckenham try-line again and in the midst of one these attacks the ball was kicked towards the Bromley line for Louis Weber to chase. As he ran through he was blatantly obstructed by a Bromley player and both players were yellow-carded for the last 4 minutes of the match, following attempted retaliatory action.

The game ended with no further scores and Beckenham picked up their first trophy of the season. The coaches decided that no one player could be selected as Man of the Match above his team-mates and awarded Clev’s horn to the whole team.
